Ashwagandha: The Ayurvedic Rejuvenator

Withania somnifera is commonly also known as Ashwagandha. It is an evergreen shrub that grows in India, the Middle East and parts of Africa. It is also known as Indian Ginseng, poison gooseberry or winter cherry. The root of this orange-red fruit is used as ayurvedic medicine. Ashwagandha got its name from the smell of its root. The root smells like a horse and so its name is Ashwagandha, Ashwa meaning horse and gandha meaning smell. It plays an important role in increasing the count of white blood cells and fighter cells that fight diseases.

Ashwagandha is used as an ayurvedic medicine because it has many health benefits. Some health benefits of Ashwagandha are as follows:

Ashwagandha has proven to reduce blood sugar levels in both healthy people and diabetic patients. Multiple studies have proved this fact and so including Ashwagandha in your daily diet helps lower your blood sugar levels.

  1. Can be a cure for cancer:

Laboratory tests have found a component in Ashwagandha called withaferin. Withaferin helps induce apoptosis which is programmed to fight cancer cells. It does that by promoting the growth of reactive oxygen species inside the cancer cells which disrupt their functioning. Animal tests have shown that ashwagandha can help treat several types of cancer like breast, brain, lung, colon and ovarian cancer. Though no results prove that ashwagandha has similar effects on humans, tests are going on to prove that.

Cortisol is a hormone that is responsible for stress. In other words, cortisol is also known as the stress hormone. It is also released in the body when our blood sugar levels get too low.
